The first of its kind, Designing Tall Buildings is an accessible reference that guidesyou through the fundamental principles of designing high-rises. Each chapter focuses on one theme central to tall-building design, giving you a comprehensive overview of the related architecture and structural engineering concepts. Mark P. Sarkisian provides clear definitions of technical terms and introduces important equations,to help you gradually develop your knowledge. Later chapters allow you to explore more complex applications, such as biomimicry.Projects drawn from Skidmore, Owingsand Merrill’s vast catalog of built high-rises, many of which Sarkisian designed, demonstrate these concepts.
This book advises you to consider the influence of a particular site’s geology, wind conditions, and seismicity. Using this contextual knowledge and analysis, you can determine what types of structural solutions are best suited for a tower on that site. You can then conceptualize and devise efficient structural systems that are not only safe, but also constructible and economical. Sarkisian also addresses the influence of nature in design, urging you to integratestructure and architecture for buildings of superior performance, sustainability, and aesthetic excellence.

Review
"Sarkisian is highly recognized as an innovative and visionary structural engineer with many years of many signature works of architecture, especially towers, to his credit. This is the perfect moment for his comprehensive book which takes stock of the most important achievements and best practices."
John Loomis,Professor of Architecture, Author
"Those who are not afraid of mathematical equations, technical graphs and diagrams, but lack the basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of designing tall buildings should check out Designing Tall Buildings....Sarkisian provides clear definitions of technical terms and introduces important equations."

Good for some, not for others.
By David M. Martin
I think the previous reviewer was a bit harsh, but some of his points are very valid.
First, this book is written by SOM and most of the project information can be found online. It is shameless promotion of their work. This takes it down a star automatically.
Who is this book for? Students like me, or for those who have not studied wind design or know virtually nothing about TALL BUILDING DESIGN. I have studied seismic design (always small short buildings), and found this book extremely useful for understanding the BASIC design methods/limitations/considerations for tall buildings. If you already know tall building design, don't buy this book. If you were preparing for an interview with a tall building design firm (SOM, TT, BH), this book is definitely for you, as it highlights some key points of different structural systems, what to consider, etc. But, it is very broad. If you are a structural engineer, it will seem very BASIC.
Is it worth $35? I think so, but it depends on what you are using it for. I was looking for some general information on TBD becuase of a small paper I was writing. I found some really good stuff in this book.

great reference for SOM works
By ROBERT J MCNAMARA
The author has presented a excellent collection of buildings with their structural systems illustrated for reference covering a major portion of the significant buildings designed by SOM over the past half century. Truly a valuable reference for the variety of structural systems commonly used in tall buildings

A Tiny Bit of Interesting Material
By JP
This book contains a small amount of mildly interetsing material on organic structures. The rest of the brief book is full of advertisements for the work of the author and his firm (very impressive), lots of equations that are not explained to the reader (other than defining each term), IBC load combinations (really? who cares and why are these in this book?), a chapter on "systems" that repeats the SAME EXACT SENTENCES over and over and over, choppy writing and poor transitions, blatant promotions for the author's inventions and innovations, and on and on. This book is far too advanced for the non-engineer and far too simplistic for the structural engineer. This could be a very good, interesting book if a major editorial overhaul is performed on this rough draft. I feel like I wasted $35 on this book.
