12 excellent short stories

Few of the stories herein are set in the (currently) known Humanx Commonwealth, and Pip and Flinx do not appear. Don't let that distract you; this is good stuff.
"Dream Done Green" (1974) Far in the future, humanity has spread across the galaxy, dragging other species in its wake. To use another author's term, many (possibly all) of the other surviving animal species once native to Earth have been 'uplifted' to become sapient. The stallion Pericles is not content with the lot of the 'mals', however. He approaches rich, bored young Casperdan on the day before she comes of age, to persuade her to help him make his dream a reality - a life's work. See if you can figure out the details of his dream before the author reveals them.
"The Emoman" (1972) The 'emoman' in question deals in mysterious drugs - the buyer asks for a particular emotion and gets it. Although his full name isn't given in the story, Sawbill the emoman is Sawbill September, brother of Skua September.
"The Empire of T'ang Lang" (1973) A day in the life (and from the perspective) of the warrior T'ang Lang - have fun identifying the various species and objects he encounters. (T'ang Lang himself is a cat, incidentally.)
"He" (1976) A *really* big sea monster (Foster considers Jaws a minnow by comparison). :)
"A Miracle of Small Fishes" (1974) Reminds me of Hemingway's _The Old Man and the Sea_. Josefa prays for her grandfather to make one last good catch of sardines before the cough takes him - but in this day and age, the sardine schools are manipulated by controlled releases of nutrients, and are intercepted far north of Josefa's hometown...
"Polonaise" (1975) An alternate history, in which Poland was not partitioned in 1772, but rose to become a great world power, lending assistance to the American Revolutionary War.
"Some Notes Concerning a Green Box" (1971) Foster's first professional sale, originally just a Lovecraftian fan letter to August Derleth.
"Space Opera" (1973) Captain Cleve has been ordered to take a major newscaster along on the first mission to contact an alien race - and fears that the mission may be jeopardized for the sake of ratings.
"Why Johnny Can't Speed" (1971) What if Congress opted to pay for a nationwide mass transit system by eliminating highway patrols, and the Supreme Court ruled that attempts to regulate interstate highway systems were in violation of the 1st Amendment? Machine guns and rocket launchers built into cars, that's what. Frank Irwin, learning of the death of his only son in a lane change dispute, prepares to exact payback.
"With Friends Like These" (1971) The Yops, who prey on all other species for food, have driven the remaining strength of the united galaxy to violate the Edict forbidding contact with the most feared race in known space, left trapped on their own planet for centuries: the humans of Earth.

"Wolfstroker" (1977) "Sam Parker...was an agent. Not undercover, but theatrical, which was harder on body and soul." After a disastrous incident with a talent who worked with trained dogs, Sam is due for luck - and finds it, in the form of Willie Whitehorse, who can play his audience's emotions as he plays his guitar.
"Ye Who Would Sing" (1976) Caitland, having just killed a man for his employers, crashes in an isolated forest - the only place anywhere on Chee, or anywhere else, that more than four of its priceless chimer trees still sing. But Katie, the solitary woman studying the trees who rescues him from the wreck, must be crazy - she hasn't staked a claim or sold a single seedling.

My introduction to Alan Dean Foster

I was introduced to Alan Dean Foster's science fiction and writing style by this volume (leaving aside his ventures into the film arena). The story after which this volume is named, "With Friends Like These...", is just my kind of sci-fi: "Terra uber alles", as Alan aptly (if not quite correctly) puts it. It is also brilliantly witty, as is so much else here. But there are also plenty of serious themes in these short stories, and the mixture makes this a most worthwhile introduction to the work of one of the most successful modern sci-fi writers around.

I have never read an Alan Dean Foster book I didn't like. This is no exception. The stories are funny and entertaining. He has a subtle, tongue-in-cheek humor which I really like.

I also recommend the second book, "...Who Needs Enemies."

About the Author

Dr. Christopher Sowton (Toronto, Ontario) holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto and a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D.) from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. He is licensed as a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) in the Province of Ontario and has been a teacher at CCNM since 1990. Additionally, he teaches dreamwork seminars for health care practitioners. Christopher runs a private health care practice, specializing in naturopathy, homeopathy, and counseling.

This is a complete guide if you are interested in working in a personal way with your dreams, with fundamentals of psychotherapy and have tools of transformation, self-discovery, growth and personal health. The author covers the theoretical, the practical part, frequent problem tips, practical solutions and useful quick reference appendices.
From his experiences in Gestalt therapy, the author noted that our sub-personalities have desires that are shown through dreams and lend themselves to self-awareness. The author intends that we benefit from dreamwork to recognize important messages of change and transformation of life communicated to us by our Self, and to nourish it in a way that can be developed.
Therefore, the content is oriented to understand and facilitate the work with dreams, and provides us with the approach and practical guidelines in a simple way. The 5-step method allows us to first capture the dream in our memory, then amplify the information impartially (history, emotions and associations embedded in the dream), thirdly get guidance to recognize what the dream tries to say (the motives), then be able to make the connection how this makes sense to you in your life, and finally you can respond with an action of change to that message. This is what gives you the benefit of dreamwork and what your Self is looking for: health and growth. The purpose is not to interpret the dream, since it may have no relation to the true message, but the discovery of the message that has a genuine resonance with personal life.
The step that I found most valuable and interesting is that motives can lead us to experience repetitive dreams that torment us. From the point of view of neuroscience it is because our brains can develop stuck neural patterns, as we are hard-wired to give more importance to ideas that seem threatening to us. Repetitive agonistic dreams are negative, and tend to contain messages from our childhood when our brains were molded with dysfunctional patterns, these dreams show you that you are still stuck, affected and limited by this limiting field (this psychological operating pattern, which manifests in your dreams exaggeratedly, but that is operating in your waking life too), and only if you recognize it can you take the choice to remain stuck the rest of your life or to visualize you moving towards another horizon.

i bought this book when i first started breeding my own sheep. it is super helpful, i am still new to the sheep breeding industry but in my 3 years of breeding and lambing myself i havent lost a lamb yet (knock on wood) with the help of this book (amongst others of course). well worth it!

If you are a sheep producer of ANY size you need this book before lambing season. I wish I had had this book from my very first lambing season. I would have saved MANY more lambs. If you save one lamb from the information in this book then it more than pays for itself! It is a "to the point" and easy to understand book. I will reread to "prep" for the upcoming season even though we have done this for 7 Years! It is that important and that helpful.

This book is a MUST for all sheep producers, new and old! It is not only VERY concise and easy to use, but this is the ONLY book I have found that actually gives you recommendations on which medications to give for specific symptoms presented and the correct dosages to use. I have saved many a lamb and a LOT of money in vet bills thanks to this book! You won't be sorry if you buy this one!
