Great Art

If you are a fan of R. Crumb and Cactus Ed this is a great Calendar. I wish I could bring myself to cut it apart and frame it because it does belong on the wall. R. Crumb definitely knew the characters and did a great job in revealing their stories through their expressions in these pictures.

Excellent book on modern Film & Game pipelines

As a film post production developer, I really enjoyed this book. I felt it explained the basic concepts of each section of the pipeline well, and it at least explained the film side of things correctly. I really enjoyed reading about the game side of things, and found it informative. In many places, reading about how games handle parts of the pipeline gave me ideas for how we in the film side could better handle certain aspects, especially when it comes to speed and versatility.

The book is broken up into chapters like a textbook, each chapter covers a concept such as 'Asset Creation' or 'Data Management'. First it explains the concept generically, without going into implementation details. Then it will explain how that concept is implemented in the film world, and what specific problems and solutions they've come up with. After that, it explains the same for the game world. Finally it contracts the two. During the chapter, you'll read sidebar anecdotes from people in each industry, going over a specific challenge and solution. These were very interesting, although it seemed like the examples from the film side of things were from larger, well known companies while the examples from the gaming side of things were much smaller companies, more indie houses, etc. That's not to disparage those examples, as I I still found them well written and fascinating.

This book has lots of relevant diagrams to help explain concepts. I think it'd be a pretty great textbook for a college course on Pipeline development.

Would make an excellent textbook

Finally got my copy. This would make an excellent text book for a class on media production, game development, film development etc. It really explains the complexity behind the production of effects for film and games. Nicely illustrated and surprisingly easy to read. I do not not know why it took so long to get a book focused on this topic, but finally there is one.

This book is more less one of a kind. So far I have not found any other books that focus on the pipeline itself in VFX or games production, that is, how to make all the bits work together.

It is extensive, and not every chapter may be relevant to your own job, but it looks to me like it covers most of what a VFX developer or artist would need to understand to be productive. I also like that it compares and contrasts the game and VFX pipelines. I don't work in games, but it's good to know what's different. Despite it's wide coverage it reads fairly easily. It isn't a dry academic text, but it provides good enough coverage to be a text book.

This book is full of beautifully drawn illustrations of surgical procedures with a running thread of "chapters" retelling the history of the specialty. I appreciated the detailed art, but this is definitely not for the faint of heart.

More Than A Book On Flash Design! Flash Cinematic Techniques: A Critical Review

I almost made the mistake of lumping this book into the numerous but worthy publications that deal with Flash design. I own a dozen or so books on illustration, digital animation and the like. And, of all the publication that produce art and media related instruction books, Focal Press is, by far, the best. It seems that they (Focal Press) have the youngest and most innovative instructors producing their titles. Sometimes you have competing authors who essentially produce similar works, in which case, having one title is usually sufficient. What I thought this book ("Flash Cinematic Techniques") was and what it actually is like the distance of a football field.

This is a must-own title.

Timing for Animation, Second Edition is the foundation of all animation texts. But, this title while considered "The Bible of Animators," has a very narrow focus of discussing how movement and speed affect the overall project/ vision.

How to Make Animated Films: Tony White's Complete Masterclass on the Traditional Principals of Animation is a course in creating 2D--or 2 dimensional/ hand drawn--animation films. Tony White's "Masterclass" goes over the fundamentals of how the old Disney animators utilized techniques of traditional illustrations to create images, emotions and movement as the foundation for animated films.

Flash Cinematic Techniques combines the essentials of the aforementioned titles and expands the discussion to take into consideration film, video/ DVD, and television standards.

Kindle customers, from the publishers customer service center

I emailed both Amazon and the publisher regarding the exercise files included on the CDROM from the printed version of the book.
Amazon referred me to the publisher and this is the response I received.

"Thank you for your inquiry.

Any of the free companion products are only available with the printed version of the product. So when an E-book is downloaded the free companion product are not included.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or need any further clarification."

Which is very strange since most companies make the exercise files available for download. This information should be listed on
The product page, to me it makes the ebook version worthless.

After seeing the authors comments to this review I purchased the kindle version, contacted the publishers customer service center and got this reply:
This CD is a free companion CD that is included with the purchase of a print copy of this book. When you download an e-book you are not eligible to receive these companion products unless it is included in the download. These CD's are not sold separately and Elsevier does not have stocked copies of this free companion product.

Missing Files

I bought the Kindle version of this book for my girlfriend for xmas. I knew it wasn't coming with a CD with the accompanying files so I assumed that I would just find a link in the book directing me to a place where I could download these files. I've bought dozens of similar books and they all host there files on their websites also, even though they supply a CD with the paperback book. Unfortunately this publisher doesn't host the accompanying files online, even if they don't supply it with the Kindle version of the book.

I emailed them and got this reply:

Dear Nkosi,

Thanks for contacting Elsevier with your inquiry.

Although we do offer certain titles for the kindle, these e-books do not include an activation code for online access. To obtain online access customers must purchase the print + online access package.
