John A. Van de Walle

�

The late John A. Van de Walle was a professor emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a mathematics education consultant who regularly gave professional development workshops for K-8 teachers in the United States and Canada. He visited and taught in elementary school classrooms and worked with teachers to implement student-centered math lessons. He co-authored the Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics K-6 series and contributed to the Pearson School mathematics program, enVisionMATH. Additionally, he wrote numerous chapters and articles for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) books and journals and was very active in NCTM, including serving on the Board of Directors, Chair of the Educational Materials Committee, and a frequent speaker at national and regional meetings.

�

Karen S. Karp is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.� Prior to entering the field of teacher education she was an elementary school teacher in New York.� Karen is a co-author of Feisty Females: Inspiring Girls to Think Mathematically, which is aligned with her research interests on teaching mathematics to diverse populations. With Jennifer, Karen co-edited Growing Professionally: Readings from NCTM Publications for Grades K-8 and co-authored (along with Janet Caldwell) Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2. Jennifer M. Bay-Williams is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky). Jennifer has published many articles on teaching and learning in NCTM journals. She has also coauthored numerous books, including: Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2, Math and Literature: Grades 6-8, Math and Nonfiction: Grades 6-8, and Navigating through Connections in Grades 6-8. She is the author of the Field Experience Guide for this book. Jennifer taught elementary, middle, and high school in Missouri and in Peru, and continues to work in classrooms at all levels with students and with teachers. Jennifer is on the Board of Directors for TODOS: Equity for All, Editor for the 2012 NCTM Yearbook, and past-president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE).

Great Resource!

I have been teaching math for 10 years and read this book for a graduate class. It is such a great resource for new and veteran teachers! It offers realistic ways for teachers to move away from the "traditional" way most teach with direct instruction and move toward student-centered problem solving strategies. I'm hoping the cost of it goes down so it is more accessible for people because it is changing the way I teach!

Amazing resource

This book is an amazing resource for an elementary school teachers. I had the pleasure of taking a college course taught by one of the writers, using this book. This is truly one of the most valuable college textbooks I have used. I imagine that I will be referencing it several hundred times in my career. It's great! One of the best features is that each chapter has a list of children's literature that goes with the concept taught! So helpful!

I am a cat lover and when I saw this book after purchasing the Grumpy Cat Worst Christmas I thought it would be cute. I like the fact that it's hardcover with a window cutout of Grumpy Cat. I think the book is very funny and adorable! It has given me many smiles and giggles. I'd recommend this to cat owners that know the cat rules you not the other way around.

Use your cookie cutters in new and unexpected ways!

This well illustrated book does a great job of showing you ways to use standard cookie cutter shapes and turn them into additional designs. I bought the Roshco Cookie Cutter set along with this book, without knowing that so many of the unique shapes used in the book are in the set and I have a whole new set of ideas now for future cookie decorations. The steps are very easy to follow and the extra tips on those "professional" finishes helped me take my cookies to a new level.

I purchased this book along with another cookie book and was dissapointed. The cookies in the pictures did not look very appetizing and the decorating was very amateurish. I was hoping for something better.

This book was brilliant! I enjoyed it very much and so did my eleven year old daughter. Easy to follow recipies, colorful images make you want to satart baking and decorating straightaway. Fanatstic idea to add the cookies paterns for those who haven't got the cutters!

Love the book

This book has all of the songs from the movie. The melodies are fun and easy to pick out on the piano. Playing full chords and melody is a challenge for me (I'm low level intermediate player), but it's worth the effort. I love the movie and the songs, and would definitely recommend this book to anyone that does, too.

About the seller, Total Music Source. I received the order confirmation from Amazon at 7:59AM, and received the "order has been shipped" email from Total Music Source 46 minutes later at 8:45AM. 3 days later it was in my mailbox, and that was with standard shipping. Book was in perfect condition. I give Total Music Source 5 stars and will definitely buy from them again!

Highly Appreciative

I am the director (and sole employee) of a newly formed non-profit. I came to this book with little prior programming experience, and found it to be all I was looking for as far as designing a database to meet our foundation's needs. A real strength of the book is that the author walks you through a wealth of examples, and provides many more to think through on your own--all with answers in the back of the book. So it's almost guaranteed there will be something which matches or parallels what you are trying to do. I read the book straight through, and found the order in which the material was presented to be logical and very well thought out. I also appreciated the dry humor sprinkled throughout this book--I would often find myself perking up and smiling to myself through a subject which a lesser author could turn into tedium.

The database design book for everyone

Database Design Solutions, By Rod Stephens is a book that offers "expert practical experience" to assist the reader in creating a flexible and robust database even if this is your first database. A database properly designed from the start will prove rewarding and beneficial to the users. A poorly designed database, will lead to continuing headaches and frustration for the developer and most likely lost customers.

The book is clear, well written and appeals to the readers. It covers a lot of ground in different chapters. It guides you in developing business rules, explains what normalization is and gives an overview of different types of databases such as Access, SQL and My Sql. It will direct you how to start SQL statements and query constructions.

My feeling is of all the chapters in the book, the best are Chapter 4, Understanding User Needs, Chapter 7, Normalization, Chapter 9, Common Design Patterns and Chapter 10, Common Design Pitfalls. These were the most informative that appealed to me.

No matter whether you are a beginner or an experienced Database developer, this book is a must for you. It will give you the basics to start the development correctly and if you are experienced, it gives you the support to be sure your doing existing databases correctly.

This book is a must read for anyone doing database development.

The Book I Wish I'd Had

Several years ago, I was "volunteered" to design a database - without any previous database experience. I succeeded, and learned a great deal from all the mistakes I made. But I'd probably have had a lot more fun and certainly taken less time if I'd had Beginning Database Design Solutions as an aid and reference. Unlike many database books (indeed, far too many software books in general), it concentrates on designing first, instead of writing code before you know what the user really wants/needs. Chapters also cover creating a database in Microsoft Access and in MySQL, so you can see theory put into practice.

If you're new to databases, this is an excellent place to start. The conversational tone and many illustrations make for an enjoyable read to which you'll refer often. A particulary nice addition is a very handy glossary.

Since it includes exercises, it can be used for classroom instruction; however, solutions are included in an appendix, making it suitable for individual study as well.

Highly recommended.

During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the government invited merchants to deliver grain in return for salt certificates with which merchants drew salt as reward. The salt certificate therefore represented a national debt, denominated in salt, the government thereby owed merchants. A speculative market of salt certificates was created in Yangzhou and brought into being powerful financiers in the early 17th century. The government, financially hard pressed, abolished the speculative market of salt certificates by franchising these financiers in return for their hereditary obligation to pay salt certificate surcharge. China was therefore deprived of a possibility to develop a public debt market. This story is a testimony to Fernand Braudel s argument of the "nondevelopment" of Capitalism in China."

Best book on Job

Newsom's thesis is that the truth about God and suffering in the book of Job is not found in any one pronouncement of the book, any section, or any genre, rather it is explored through the dialogic process. Job is a polyphonic text, meaning a text composed of different voices, none of which has privilege. While this will be less than satisfying to some, it does offer an interesting study. Newsom does a lot of work with narrative theory, as opposed to many of the Job scholars out there. Some of her unique insights include an ingenious explanation for why the third cycle of the dialogues ends the way it does, the (il)logic of Job's speeches in the dialogue, and an interesting theory on Elihu's speeches. Job invites us to offer our own explanation for suffering to the discussion. If you have been working on Job for a while and are frustrated with all the conflicting theories, pick this book up for a fresh read.

Great in small doses

Quite a slog through this because I don't purrrrr through intellectually-inspired theological petting. Almost finished. However, I enjoyed the unique perspective of Moral Imaginations and the juxtaposition of poem, prose, wisdom dialog to decode a divine dissertation. This perspective gave me a greater understanding of Jesus' parables.

Insightful, thought provoking.

One of the most widely referred to books in the Bible and yet probably one of the least understood. We talk of Job as a cliche, but this book makes the timeless moral, philosophical and even existential issues (ooooooh doesn't that sound heavy?) of the book come alive -- even to those of us who don't really believe in an immanent God! And unlike this review, it is very readable!
