An Inspiring Read for Anyone Involved with Libraries
By Meghan
I am not a librarian, but I am passionate about the sustainability of libraries. As a resident of a small 3,200 person town in Vermont and a member of the Friends group, I was truly inspired by this book! There are so many services & possibilities that libraries bring to life, but they are unfortunately not widely known. This book helps libraries go from being seen as the "place to get books" to becoming the essential place that allows a community to thrive. Libraries have a difficult job and small rural libraries with less than 1 FTE staff member need all the help and energy from volunteers they can possibly get. After reading this book, I'm inspired to work with other volunteers to set up a book club of library advocates (employees & volunteers) in our town as well as neighboring towns to change the conversation and create forward moving steps to help our libraries change their image, increase funding, form community partnerships, create value-added metrics, and regain their true purpose. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who works in a library, loves their local library, or wants to see their community succeed.

A Must Read for Librarians
By Mary Beth Revels
The librarians I talk to have the same concern I do. We want to make sure our libraries stay relevant in our communities. We know we change lives but how do we make more people in our community and funding decision makers aware of this? John J. Huber and Steven V. Potter have written a great, easy to read and inspiring book on how to get the word out. It's not so important to count the people who come through our doors. We need to count and measure and share the stories and ways we change and improve lives. "The Purpose-Based Library" gives real-life examples of how to accomplish this.
