About the Author
Tracy I. Storer was Professor of Zoology at the University of California, Berkeley, coauthored California Grizzly with Lloyd P. Tevis, Jr. (California, revised edition 1996), and wrote many other books and articles. Robert L. Usinger was Professor of Zoology at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of Aquatic Insects of California (California, 1959), among other publications. David Lukas is a professional naturalist and author of Wild Birds of California (2000) and Watchable Birds of the Great Basin (1999).

Hugely Disappointed

I used the original version of this book back 40 years ago when the co-author was Usinger ("Sierra Nevada Natural History" (1963) by Storer and Usinger). I loved that thing and annotated it variously and color coded the page edges for quick reference to groups of species.

So I found that my cherished tome had been updated and "improved" and it was a no-brainer to buy.

What a disappointment!

Admittedly, I have not used this new book yet (just came today) but I am greatly put off by it's layout and poor graphics, compared to the old version. The old version was SO much more accessible with full page comparisons of species drawings for quick assessment and ID. It had weak color photos but they are better than the new ones. THAT is inexcusable considering how far (light years) photography and printing have advanced in the 41 years between editions. The new version has information scattered about and comparisons not so nearly ready-to-hand as the 1963 book.

Anybody use BOTH versions? I'd be interested in comments by people who knew and used the 1963 book and have used this one.

REVIEWS: I find it revealing that after 11 years (!!!) there are only 7 reviews of this book. Millions go to the Sierra every year and hundreds of thousands look for guide books such as this. SEVEN reviews??? That in itself is very telling.

I have John Muir Laws' guide book, which is beautifully illustrated and intensely and very usefully organized for quick ID of all manner of Sierra biota. My reason for buying the new Storer and Usinger update (w/o Usinger but deliberate revision of the old book) was that I missed the commentary that Laws lacks. The Laws book is crammed full of illustration, beautifully rendered; but it has almost no info beyond the line or two or phrase or two immediately next to a drawing. I yearned for the coherently organized text of Storer and Usinger (1963) with careful species descriptions including life form, habitat, range, etc., etc.

I'm stuck with Laws. It is a wonderful though lacking book. I won't take both books on backpacking treks (both are very heavy). So I will just donate the new Storer book to the book sale. I don't think I will ever use it in the field.

A useful guide

Bought this book for some friends, and they've gotten quite a bit of use out of it for identifying trees and wildlife in the numerous parks in the Sierra Nevada near where they live. Sounds like a winner to me.

A great reference guide with a history of its own

This book, on its own, has quite a bit of history. The short entries have a lot of character and information. They definitely align better with the localities of the Sierra Nevada better than more general books of flora and fauna. There are more detailed books about wildflowers in the area. However, the range of coverage is pretty amazing. It definitely has answered quite a few questions that, even after 20+ years of visiting the same area, weren't exactly clear.

A nice resource for anyone written in an entertaining and engaging way.

Well-written, slow sequel to P&P

This was a well researched book. There were some sweet moments between the Darcys. However, the book ended too abruptly and really lacked a plot that included Darcy and Elizabeth. I always think a P&P sequel should be about their marriage. I wanted to enjoy this book more, but I didn't. I would read this author again, but hope that a future P&P book would be centered on the Darcys. This book was more about Georgiana and the Colonel's love lives than anything else.

The Complete Dialogue with Darcy

Entertaining continuation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. If the Darcys and Pemberley were real, Derbyshire would be the place to visit for several weeks. Many people in the Darcy family are falling in love right and left. Fathers has given consent to many young men, and family alliances are forged. Sad part was that Anne de Bourgh passed, leaving her free to attempt her will on others. However; Lizzy was to smart for Lady Catherine, and the Darcys headed for Yorkshire to visit friends of the family. Darcy and the Duke had similar interests in planting, and the new steam engines pumping water from the mines. Happiness for all except Lady Catherine, because when she arrived with her nephew, the Earl, Pemberley was locked up with just a skeleton crew, and Mrs. Reynolds totally enjoyed her disappointment. Good woman and so devoted to the Darcys.

No compelling romance (anywhere), no angst, no mystery, no thrills, no witty dialogue. I found this so boring that I skipped pages just to get to the end so that I could f,ind another book to read.

Reviews in the past have generally treated each class of hormone individually, but this set of volumes is subdivided according to the properties common to all classes. Such an organization permits the examination of the hypothesis that differing classes of hormones, acting according to common principles, are determinants of processes and phases in plant development. Also in keeping with this theme, a plant hormone is defined as a compound with the properties held in common by the native members of the recognized classes of hormone. Current knowledge of the hormonal regulation of plant development is grouped so that the three volumes consider advancing levels of organizational complexity, viz: molecular and subcellular; cells, tissues, organs, and the plant as an organized whole; and the plant in relation to its environment. The present volume treats the molecular and subcellular aspects of hormones and the processes they regulate. Although it deals with chemically distinct classes of hormone, this volume stresses properties and modes of studying them, that are common to all classes.

An excellent updated edition of the definitive classic

I've relied heavily on the prior edition of this guide over the last 10 years to guide me around, over and under the most beautiful city in the world and it's quickly become one of the most cherished books in my possession. This new edition is fully updated and reveals the most recent discoveries and sites which have been discovered/reopened. It even gives a detailed walk through of the House of Livia, which wasn't even opened to the public until months after the book was printed. This book is worth it's weight in gold to anyone trying to decipher and understand the mysteries and riddles of the eternal city. Cannot recommend enough

I actually read the whole book. It's very well written and readable. Highly recommended. The biggest problem is there aren't any photographs of the current structures so keep your phone or computer handy to look them up on google as you read.

what did it look like two thousand years ago

A frustration I've had when visiting Rome - and especially the forums/fora and Palatine - is: what did it look like two thousand years ago? The Roman Forum and Via Sacra are pretty much just paved pathways with column pedestals on either side. Why bother? This book, more than most, really explains what I am seeing - or not seeing. Building histories, floorplans, overlays showing different construction in different eras in the same spot, drawings of what the buildings looked like, etc. The book is dense and has good drawings. For a guidebook, it definitely is on the geeky end of the spectrum for those that need to know how something works or what something looked like. Probably best read as background material before a trip. It is pretty hefty and dense, so it is not something you would want to carry with you while doing a walking tour, though I have done it and not regretted it.

2nd chance of love at Christmastime

Brielle and Toby love story was interesting and heartfelt. It was amazing how Toby took Sebastian's words without consulting Brielle about the allegations against her. Just like any man would do with his best friend. But I was happy to read that in the end Brielle and Toby resolved their issue. And vow to always listen and talk about any problems that they may encounter together. Another great book Roxy Wilson :)!!!!!

I really liked this one, few errors, but better than Cole and Lexi story...put together better, loved and hated the fact that they waited so long in the cabin to realize their errors, because they both should of communicated better with each other, but mostly his fault, hell who ask another man something about their wife? He really didn't get the memo...But alls well that ends well. Recommend it for a quick read.

About the Author
Robert Gisclair went to Vietnam in 1968 with the 501st Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. On his return, he went through three years of college, backpacked through Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Middle East. He has worked for 35 years in the oil fields and offshore platforms in southeast Louisiana where he lives with his Brazilian wife and their two sons in Cut Off (down the bayou).

Where has this author been hiding?

I don't even know how to begin writing a review of "Singing to the Lions". It was more of an experience than a story. The main character, White, is introduced as he joins a platoon of veterans. The rest of the book is the continued development of the psyche of this average, innocent American boy into the total warrior and the price he must pay throughout that evolution. The driving force is not his desire to be a warrior but his survival and the survival of his friends who found him worthy and taught him what he must know to become what he was to become. The warrior spirit was passed to him as it had been passed to those before him and he is left to pass it to those coming after him. The whole story has a very personal quality and an aura of truth that only a writer who had been White could have told. What was revealed in the story was much too personal to have been fiction. I'm sure characters and events were modified and that there is fiction as necessary to create the story but the soul of the story, its essence, is very true. The only thing I found disappointing was that the book had to end.

I have read many books about Vietnam but before reading "Singing to the Lions" only three novels really stood out; "Matterhorn", "Fields of Fire" and "13th Valley" and this stands tall among these. I was shocked at the literary quality of what I assume is a first novel. It was like reading Hemingway for the first time. The writing was simply beautiful as the deepest chambers of a mind were unfolded for the reader so naturally.

I sincerely hope Mr. Gisclair has more in the works and I hope he realizes how good a writer he really is. I have been waiting for this book for years and finally someone with the talent to write it did so and I thank Mr. Gisclair for his willingness to again live with all those ghosts to tell their story; a brave thing indeed.

Could not put it down

If I could give this book ten stars I would do so! An amazing journey through a year in the life of an American soldier in the Vietnam war. You feel everything he encounters and sleep in the jungle along with him. I can't praise this author enough for giving us insight I to what it was like over there it is just a great book and one I will read again. I cannot wait for the paper version to come out so I can buy it for gifts .

A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR THE IT MANAGER OF THE FUTURE!!

Are you a savvy manager who wants to capitalize on the wave of change that is occurring with Web services, SOAs; and, more recently, cloud computing? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Douglas K. Barry, has done an outstanding job of writing a 2nd edition of a book that gives you the opportunity to consider some ideas and advice that just might make it easier for your organization to realize the potential benefits in Web services, SOAs, and cloud computing.

Author Barry, begins with a high-level story of how a person on a business trip interacts with a SOA based on Web services and cloud computing. In addition, the author provides a high-level explanation for the technology and standards used for the business trip. He then explains the Web services connections. The author then, weaves the concepts of service-oriented architecture into a discussion of cloud computing. Next, he introduces force field analysis and applies it to the adoption of Web services. In addition, the author applies force field analysis to service-oriented architectures. He continues by providing force field analysis for adopting two types pf cloud providers: software as a service and platform as a service. Then, the author deals with managing the human aspect of the change that occurs with the adoption of a service-oriented architecture with cloud computing. Next, he provides tips on how to make development easier. The author then introduces incremental SOA analysis that aims to help manage change by improving the project selection process in a way that also improves the chance of success for the selected project. In addition, he provides three basic experiments that use Web services and then uses the story about the business trip discussed earlier to address more advanced uses of Web services. Solid, diverse, and wide ranging introduction to IT applications of the future

This is a well-written introduction to the technology behind cloud-based IT applications. It is definitely targeted at IT managers; it is not a detailed technical examination of how things are implemented. It does give extensive background and motivation for the evolution of application architecture, where things are going, and how to help your organization get there.

I particularly liked the material covering obstacles you are likely to encounter in your own organization and how to address them. This is perhaps the most unique and valuable part of the book. We all know about the existence of organizational "anti-bodies" that impede change. The book covers recognizing them, picking pilot projects to avoid them, and then moving the organization forward based on success.

There are lots of topics around the construction of SOA-based applications and the book touches on almost all of them. A few could have been covered in a bit more depth: it would have been interesting to hear more on legal issues, application reliability, and selection of vendors. Perhaps Mr. Barry will cover more of these in a next edition or another book!

Overall, this is an excellent book for getting started in cloud services and moving your organization toward a cloud-based future.

The art of communication is vitally important to most industries. In the technology and engineering fields effective and clear communication to the stakeholders of most large projects determines team successes or failures. Mr. Barry's ability to cross this communication chasm is unique and compelling. This book builds on his previous work, which I have part of my reference arsenal, if not for the technical explanation but the outstanding explanation of behaviors exhibited on teams within organizations. Excellent Work! I would recommend this book to any NON-IT manager interested in understanding the minds of their IT peers.

Same as all the self-help books on the topic

I keep thinking that one day I will find a book that has some new and different useful information in it about managing anxiety and putting your mind at ease. To me this is like every single other self-help book I have read on the subject, i.e., go to a quiet place, go to your "happy place" in your mind, breathe slowly in and out and think happy thoughts instead of the ones that are bothering you. There is not enough different or useful information for me to keep reading the same old hoohaw. I don't know why people keep writing books on this same tired subject because they are all the same. Until I can find something that really and truly is helpful and can tell me something I really don't already know, I'm not going to read any more of these. I hope they help others but for the years that I've been working at it, they just don't do a whole lot for me and nothing has changed as far as practice and practical advice.

This book teach how to use progressive deliberation to get rid of or cut behind on unenthusiastic opinion and nervousness. It help you shift into a state of recreation. Plus there are a file of obliging orders to employ for plummeting nervousness in daylight hours to day life. There's too recommendation for looking for expert notice if nervousness is a grave subject in your life. I consideration the recommendation was obliging, particularly the preparation on progressive thought.
