About the Author

Dr. Sheng-Hong Chen has studied hydraulic engineering for 40 years since he was a undergraduate student. He has been working in several professional affiliations such as International Committee of Large Dam, Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, Chinese Water Conservancy Society and Chinese Hydro-electrical Power Engineering Society. He has published nearly 200 paper and research works on Dam engineering, Slope engineering and Tunnels and underground caverns. Dr. Chen is now working at Wuhan University, Wuhan, China.

About the Author
Harry L. Watson is professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He coedits Southern Cultures, a quarterly journal, and has published three scholarly books as well as numerous articles. His 1983 An Independent People: The Way We Lived in North Carolina, 1750-1820 was co-recipient of the AHA's James Harvey Robinson Award. Watson's most recent book, Liberty and Power: The Politics of Jacksonian America (1990), is considered the most cogent synthesis of Jacksonian politics in a generation of scholarship. Professor Watson has been a Woodrow Wilson Center Fellow, and he lectures widely in the United States and Abroad.

Policies Matter

This is a fine, concise account of the policy differences that often get overlooked in accounts of the personal rivalry, even hatred, between Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay. They had real personal issues, but they also had very different ideas about the role of government in the early years of the Republic and this books makes them very clear.

Clear, concise explanation the Clay/Jackson power struggle

Today we know them as Old Hickory and the Great Compromiser. However, they called each other King Andrew the first and the Corrupt Bargainer. Jackson and Clay were the opposite poles of the axis of Antebellum politics. Each man carried an ideological dislike and often personal hatred of the other man. However, each shaped the political landscape in the US perhaps more than any men after 1800. The 1820-30s were the utmost of critical in the development of the US- the crossroads where the US could prove a failed democratic experiment or emerging industrial country. In these crucial times nothing happened in Washington, DC without either Clay's or Jackson's approval. Their personal feud infulenced everything from construction of national highways, and the national banking system to slavery and tarriffs.
Watson keeps an even hand in explaining the complex relationship of these two important men. His writing is percise and insightful. The first part is Watson's explantion and analysis. Part 2 consist of over 100 pages of historical letters and writings. This allows the reader to understand Jackson and Clay thru their own words. The 200+ pages read very fast and contain all the information your likely to ever need to know about the connection between Clay and Jackson. The book was designed "to be a reasonable one-week assignment for a college course." It proves very reasonable indeed.

A little biased

I felt that the author of this book is one of those who romanticizes the life and career of Andrew Jackson, while glossing over his more controversial and perhaps more interesting acts. The whole of the book read as a sort of shrugging off of anything negative that Jackson had done, and an embrace of his persona and political career.

It seemed as if Henry Clay was an after-thought of the author, as he went on and on in praise of Jackson, he did not pay nearly as much attention to Clay (particularly positive attention). All in all this book is alright as an introduction, but I wouldn't accept it as a final truth on Jackson or Clay.

To confuse things, I also write adventure travel books set firmly on planet Earth. Weird, I know, but it makes me�tick. I am a South African, currently living in the UK with my husband, Andrew, my three daughters, a yapping Toy Pomeranian, and a fantastic farm cat called Pixel. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, traveling, herding kids around, taking dogs for walks, and avoiding all cooking.

Totally grabs you and sucks you right in!

This was my first book by Gwynn White and I couldn't put it down. I stayed up all night just to finish it and can't wait to read the rest of the series to find out what happens next. I just adore Lynx and her spunky feisty persona.

African steampunk fantasy at its best!

Rebels Honor offers a great new voice in fantasy with the world building strongly reminiscent of Africa. Lynx is a strong and interesting heroine and the concepts of advanced tech fallen into misuse and largely forgotten is both intriguing and central to the plot. The opening chapters of the book are extremely strong and create a vivid and realistic view of a world divided, with Lynxes clan, village and ostrich hunting jumping out of the page at the reader. In the remainder of the book there is interesting misdirection and misrepresentation of characters which increases the sense of intrigue as well as anticipation - you as the reader know something about each character that the characters collectively do not and it is a heady experience. Axel is a wonderful and straightforward match to Lynx and you find yourself really cheering for him as the story progresses, but he is not as complex and layered as Lukan and this is definitely the character to watch! This was an easy and enjoyable read and comes highly recommended.

Well worth it

This is the first book I have read from Gywnn White and it was good. It's not a typical romantic story, though there is romance in the plot, and bonus points for it not being hard out political either. Timeline wise can almost be compare to the Shannara series from Terry Brooks in that it happens way into the future after a great war threatened the whole of civilisation; but in this case some technology still exits. The main characters are complex and well developed and continue to grow throughout the book and even in the second one which I am currently reading. Lynx, as a heroine, shows that complexity and growth really well as she goes from being a raider in the Norrin tribe to being the crown princess and future empress. She finds out that nothing is as cut and dried as she though and has to revise quite a bit of her idealism and learn to maneuver among all the greys.

Great book. Great pictures, I can not even decide which are better, these or those of Armando Salas who was Barragan 's architecture photographer. Being a guide at Barrag�n's House I have many books on the subject and this is one of the best. I am just starting to read it but so far I've learned new things.
