fractal fiction
By Careful reader
Suspend disbelief and go-with-the-flow as discombobulated novelist, helped by beautiful mathematician and Hungarian hard-man, tracks down his missing PC. Fractal action. Certainly an original work and I can see it being picked out and celebrated as such. Makes a strong case for back-up memory.

Nothing & Everywhere
By aerodrum
I have read Nothing & Everywhere recently by N.L.G. and enjoyed it very much!!!
Normally - they say - you can't put a book down if it's that good.
Well, I say - I didn't want to pick it up towards the end for the fear of finishing it!!!
Well done indeed!

A Lively, Entertaining Read
By aubreypub
A mystery, action-adventure tale that features a beautiful female character who can't quit explaining the most esoteric aspect of mathematics got my attention fairly quickly.
There's something erotic about a lovely lass who smells of a meadow and as a conversational gambit opens with, "And what about pi, John?" Irresistible. Not limited to higher math, the love interest in this fast paced novel, which often reminded me of John Buchan at his best, can also riff on Nicola Tesla and classical music. It's no wonder that John Smith, our protagonist, is smitten within minutes of meeting Susie Bellavista. All the characters in this very cinematic quest to find a lost computer are interesting including the two handguns that take on philosophical importance. The Sig and Beretta are crucial and play an important role. Clearly, the author has a wide range of interests and experience that play out in the action, conversations, digressions, dreams and discussions that make Nothing and Everywhere: A Moral Tale a lively, entertaining read. I sped through it in a single sitting which is the highest compliment I can bestow on a writer.

Fun book for Learning Gov't...
By C. Smith
This is a really nice book - MUCH better than the one my daughter was using at school. It's organized in such a way that you can combine the short chapters in your own way, and the suggestions for deeper exploration are great, too. It has the full text of the Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence, so it's a great stepping off point for looking at the letters of the founders and understanding the language of the time.

More of Cathie's Energy Grid
By Winston Whitaker
All of Cathie's books are important, but this one gives important reinforcement to his early work, THE ENERGY GRID. He gives new information on the energy grid, plus analyses the harmonics of several free energy devices, and Tibetan levitation, Irish round towers and more. I highly recommend all his books.

Toward A Unified Theory Of The Cosmos
By Paul A. Tatman
Captain Bruce Cathie shows how HARMONICS - wave forms of light - and their interaction and resonance, form the basis or "matrix" of the universe. Advanced applications for space travel, "free" energy production and much more could be developed. An important book, filled with mathematical data and derivations to back up his case. He shows examples of how the ancients used this knowledge to design the Great Pyramid, the world grid system, and even the basis for the English system of measurement. He is convinced a secret group is utilizing this knowledge and purposefully keeping the world ignorant and backward. Based upon the impact this kind of advancement would have on the "profitable" fossil fuel monopoly, it's hard to argue with him. Carefully written for both the scientist and the layman, The Bridge To Infinity is a powerful and important book and ahead of its time. To those with a scientific background, it's a "must-read". To those without such a background, I say READ IT ANYWAY.

The Harmonics of Boredom
By Johns
Bruce Cathie presents more mathematical calculations about harmonics in this book. Most of it went over my head. There seemed to be an element of barrel scraping about it as Cathie turned his attention to the harmonics of George Adamki's obviously fake UFO, and the alleged birthplace of Jesus, which he claims was "significant in regard to geometric positioning", but he doesn't provide evidence to substantiate that assertion. The little bit about Tesla and the development of the laser was OK, plus the first couple of pages about his UFO sightings, but that's about it.

The authors provide a critical analysis of the origins of social marketing as a concept and of the claims made by its supporters and detractors in order to highlight what social marketing can and cannot achieve. This is followed by a review of strategic issues that must be considered in developing social marketing programmes, including persuasion resistance, message relevance and message framing.

Key themes included in the text are the impact of cultural factors on health-related behaviours, ethical issues and attitudes as a key factor underlying health-related behaviours. The authors introduce concepts, theories and strategies that will aid the development, testing and implementation of social marketing interventions.

Key features

  • Mini case studies provide real-world applications of the theories and concepts under discussion.
  • Summaries at the end of each chapter reinforce key terms, concepts and theories.
  • Discussion questions provided at the end of each chapter can be used for class discussions and both formative and summative assessment activities.
  • An online glossary is provided as a quick reference tool.
  • An instructor’s manual and PowerPoint slides are provided for lecturers and there are multiple choice questions and weblinks for students.

The book is suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of business and marketing and those studying modules in social marketing.

This is a good book to be used as a reference for A and P especially if you find textbooks a little too much to read. This book is great for anatomy and physiology students in college. The info is given in a concise, but informative matter. The material in this book is easy to study from. However, I also used the following books which are also available on amazon.com:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
    (Vol 1) ISBN: 0971999619
    (Vol 2) ISBN: 0971999627
If you want to know the kind of questions that most A and P teachers ask on college exams, buy the last two books. ...

    HELPFUL, but not the best!
    By Jeremiah Robinson
I ordered this book because I was taking an Anatomy and Physiology class at my high school. I figured that it could probably help me understand some things better if I could have another source other than the book that I already use. It didn't fail me. This book basically went in just about the same order as my school book, and it provided me with in depth, yet practical, information about certain topics that I really couldn't comprehend from my teacher. It has a lot of good diagrams, and it explains the chemical processes of the body nicely. If you are in a class of this sort, I would advise you to get this book. It could really help you out if you just read it.

The Templars: History and Myth: From Solomon's Temple to the Freemasons, by Michael Haag

An order of warrior monks founded after the First Crusade to protect pilgrims to Jerusalem, the Templars developed into one of the wealthiest and most powerful bodies in the medieval world. Yet two centuries later, the Knights were suddenly arrested and accused of blasphemy, heresy and orgies, their order was abolished, and their leaders burnt at the stake. Their dramatic end shocked their contemporaries and has gripped people's imaginations ever since. This new book explains the whole context of Templar history, including, for the first time, the new evidence discovered by the Vatican that the Templars were not guilty of heresy. It covers the whole swathe of Templar history, from its origins in the mysteries of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem through to the nineteenth century development of the Freemasons. The book also features a guide to Templar castles and sites, and coverage of the Templars in books, movies and popular culture, from "Indiana Jones" to the Xbox360 game Assassin's Creed.

    Review
“Haag sifts through the history and the legends to illuminate these mysterious Holy Warriors. . . . Readers of The Da Vinci Code and other fictions relating to the Templars will enjoy this well-written, copiously illustrated, and solidly researched book. Highly recommended.” (Library Journal)

    From the Back Cover

The first history of the legendary knights since the Vatican momentously released the records of their trial and exoneration

    Who were the Templars?
What was the secret of their wealth and power?
Why did the pope and the king of France act to destroy them?

The Knights Templar were founded on Christmas Day 1119, on the very spot in Jerusalem where Jesus Christ was crucified. A religious order of fighting knights, the Templars defended the Holy Land and Christian pilgrims in the decades after the First Crusade. Legendary for their bravery and dedication, the Templars became one of the wealthiest and most powerful bodies of the medieval world—until they were condemned for heresy two centuries after their foundation, when the order was abolished and its leaders were burned at the stake.

In The Templars, renowned historian Michael Haag investigates the origins and history, the enduring myths, and the soaring architecture of an enigmatic order long shrouded in mystery and controversy. The hand of the Templars, many believe, can be found in everything from Cathar heresy to Masonic conspiracies, and the Knights Templar still inspire popular culture, from Indiana Jones to Xbox games, to the novels of Dan Brown.

    About the Author
Michael Haag has written widely on the Egyptian, Classical and Medieval worlds. He is author of the much-admired Alexandria: City of Memory Yale UP), and of bestselling Rough Guides to Tutankhamun and The Da Vinci Code.

A Great History both of the Templars and their times
    By Mr. Truthteller
Anytime I pick up a book with "The History and the Myth" of some subject in the title, there is usually more myth still being presented as history than history itself and the book turns out to be a disappointment. This book is surprisingly different and surprisingly readable.

For one thing, the book is not just about the Templars, but about the Templars and their times (from their inception Christmas Day, 1119 to November, 1312, when Pope Clementine, under pressure from the king of France, Philip IV, disbanded the group and ordered all Christian monarchs to arrest them and seize their assets). In learning about the Templars, you also learn a lot about the first Crusades, the history of Europe and the Roman Catholic Church, the Byzantine Empire, Saladin (conqueror of Jerusalem), and a host of other matters and people.

For another, the actual background and history of the Templars is much more interesting, and fascinating, than any fictionalized accounts in the movies, think Indiana Jones, or books, think Dan Brown novels.

There are many reasons the Templars did not fade into history after being disbanded. This book ably reviews them all, including their renown at the time as warriors (although somewhat surprising only about a tenth of its members were actually frontline fighters) and code of conduct, their wealth as an Order, and their construction of great castles and cathedrals.

Overall, the book is a very worthy, and up to date, history on this fascinating group.

A total history of the crusades
    By Dr. B. Wisnubroto
This book gives a very good narration about the history of The Crusades fron the First Crusade to the 13th. The explanation about the crusades, from the causes, the principal actors etc is very comprehensive but written in an easy to understand style. On the other hand, the history about The Templars is also written comprehensively, but only fills about 30 - 40 % of the book's content, so most of this book's contents is more about the history of The Crusades.
Whatever, after reading this book, I have reached the conclusion that what has been popularly written or filmed about The Templars by authors such as Dan Brown etc, is more myth or fiction than historical facts.
At the end of the book Michael Haag also gives a list of other books, films, videos currently on the market about the Templars, so the reader can delve deeper about the subject or just find other material for comparison.
Anyway, Micael Haag's book provides good reading and is a must for history buffs.

    Good and honest
    By H. Payens
Michael Haag's book is an honest history that is well-researched, relying on documented history rather than myth and speculation. It does address all the hoopla surrounding the order in an excellent chapter entitled "Conspiracies" where he sheds light on many myths. The photos of famous Templar places at the end of the book are also welcome. My only criticism is the short shrift he gives to the later crusades, in particular the Richard the Lion Heart era which only warrents a page or two. Like many books on the Templars, at times the focus wanders to a discussion of the crusades in general. Although to some extent the context is necessary, more detail on the Templars proper, especially during the 1200's, would have strengthened the book.

All in all a good book, but if you are already a crusade/Templar buff there won't be too much new aside from a nice discussion on the Chinon parchmant and other recent discoveries.

Culture and Enchantment, by Mark A. Schneider

Max Weber viewed modern life as disenchanted, an arena from which scientific inquiry had banished magic. In contrast, Mark Schneider argues intriguingly that enchantment—the sense that we are confronted by inexplicable phenomena—persists in the world today, although it has shifted from the natural to the cultural arena. Culture and Enchantment shows that students of culture today operate in social and intellectual circumstances similar to those of seventeenth-century natural philosophers. Just as Newton was drawn to alchemy, scholars today are fascinated by ghostly and mercurial agents thought to account for the meanings of cultural entities.

For interpretive disciplines, Schneider suggests, meaning often behaves behaves as mysteriously as the apparitions pursued by centuries ago by natural philosophers. He demonstrates this using two case studies from anthropology: Clifford Geertz's description of Balinese cockfights and Yoruba statuary, and Claude Levi-Strauss's analyses of myths. These provide a basis for actively engaging disputes over the meaning and interpretation of culture.

Culture and Enchantment will appeal to an interdisciplinary audience in anthropology, sociology, history, history and sociology of science, culture studies, and literary theory. Schneider's provocative arguments will make this book a fulcrum in the continuing debate over the nature and prospects of cultural inquiry.

Earth needs a miracle. Out of the Beyond invade the New Men, stronger, faster and smarter than the old. Star Watch sends a massed battle fleet to stop them. It’s a disaster. Admiral Fletcher barely escapes annihilation by heading at sub-light speed for a nearby star system. His battered ships are running out of food, fuel and missiles. He knows the New Men will use jump gates, waiting for him six months from now at his destination. Star Watch Command frantically searches for a way to rescue the vessels. Earth has an ancient alien starship in the Oort cloud, with a suspicious AI refusing to cooperate with the scientists. The vessel has powerful weapons—if anyone could figure out how to make them work after ten thousand years. Star Watch summons Captain Maddox, an unorthodox Intelligence officer who makes things happen. He is given command of Victory and told to fix the ancient weapons, rescue Fletcher’s ships and help them battle home again.

A thoughtful and entertaining addition to the series.
    By Richard
Much better than the first book of the series, 'The Lost Command' adds more background to Captain Maddox and the ship's AI, as well as the burgeoning romance with Meta. We finally get to meet Dr. Ludendorff (I must be just as smart as him because I figured out the ships AIs problem before he came aboard) and he gets some of the ships problems fixed.

Personally, I think this is Vaughn Heppner's best book. His writing style and thought processes telling the story have really matured. After 'Star Viking' I was ready to write him off as a hack, but THE LOST STARSHIP series has changed my mind.

If you haven't read the first episode, that is ok the book gives enough background to get you up to speed. Also, the story is complete, no stupid cliffhangers.

I highly recommend THE LOST COMMAND..

Better Than the First Book "Lost Starship"

I am at a loss for words! The difference between this book and the first book of the series, “The Lost Starship” is astounding! This book was a fantastic book to read. It made sense. The author finally managed to put some sense into the actions of his main character, Captain Maddox, and stopped making him sound like an idiot. He actually put some “humanity” into Captain Maddox and made him act like a normal person albeit a very smart person.

I’m still don’t understand the rank structure in this book. A Navy Captain ranks just below an Admiral. Will, there could be a Commodore in-between them in time of war, but usually a Navy Captain is also the commander of most Naval large and important Naval vessels. They have a lot of experience since you don’t make Captain until well past usually 20 years. I can’t remember how long Maddox has been in the Star Watch Intelligence Service but he seems to have been around for awhile. They are treating the rank of Captain in this book as one step above a Lieutenant which is crazy. Valerie seems to have some service time too and she has been promoted to Captain also hoping to command a Star War starship which as a Captain she should. Instead, she gets assigned to Captain Maddox and is busted down to a Lieutenant! What happened to the rank of Commander or even Lt Commandeer? It would sure have cleared things up if those ranks had been included since that’s what most military readers would have expected.

Ok so on with the book. Maddox finally gets back aboard the Victory and he’s place in command but the alien AI hasn’t quite gotten his senses back and will only allow Maddox to command through him and only if it will achieve the AI’s objectives. The AI has a name now, Driving Force Galyan, but that doesn’t seem to change much. The banter between Maddox and Galyan has improved quite a bit with their discussions seeming to fit into the mission. It improves greatly later on when they wipe the AI’s core and rid it of a virus.

So, the purpose of this book it to rescue the Fifth Fleet which has fought the New Men but was getting annihilated and then decided to flee to fight another day. That decision was probably the correct one but it’s going to take the Fifth Fleet several months to reach a place where they might be able to jump back to Earth. Unfortunately, the New Men will have several months to fix their star ships and will be waiting to destroy the rest of the Fifth Fleet. But, Captain Maddox and his crew must bring the Victory to the aide of the Fifth Fleet and do so with the Victory’s advanced weaponry fully functional!

This book was pretty exciting. The writing was certainly better than in the first book and a lot of things were explained about Captain Maddox and his crew. They all got around to figuring out they had to work together and even the ship AI started cooperating even though he tried very hard to act like he wasn’t.

I think the encounters with the New Men turned out logically, although the New Men did set several traps that the Victory and Captain Maddox barely got out of. Meta did have much of a part in this book but she did provide some kind of love interest for Maddox to prove that he wasn’t just a cold hearted, ah, dude! I thought that was possible. Still, what I couldn’t figure out is why Professor Ludendorff so eagerly joined the Victory’s crew after he said he wasn’t going to board that vessel when he first discovered it. That was never explained as far as I know. It’s also interesting to have to write in another character that’s even more intelligent than Captain Maddox just so someone can figure everything out. Of course the author found that having a highly intelligent Professor around allowed him to fix things without explaining why just because we wouldn’t understand the explanation. That’s a good trick.

Ok, I change my mind. This series is now much better than I expected it to get. I guess there could be another book since the Fifth Fleet hasn’t returned to Earth and the New Men are still a threat. So, if the author can write a third book as well as this one, then please do. Just remember, I and other readers don’t know how a book will turn out until we’ve read them! Not fair!

and stopped making him sound like an idiot

I am impressed with the improvement between this book and the first book of the series, “The Lost Starship”. This book was a real page turner. The author provided insight into the actions of his main character, Captain Maddox, and stopped making him sound like an idiot. He fleshed out Captain Maddox’s character and made him act like a normal person albeit a very smart person.
I really don’t understand the rank structure in this book. A Navy Captain ranks just below an Admiral, then a rear Admiral then a Commodore in-between them. You normally don’t make Captain until well past usually 20 years. (Although in time of war it is not unheard of. I can’t remember how long Maddox has been in the Star Watch Intelligence Service but he seems to have been around for a while. At one point in this book ,the rank of Captain as one step above a Lieutenant, then later the marine asked to call him commander since a Marine Captain in a lower rank (a marine can’t deal with a rank Of Navy Captain? Besides that the master of a ship is always called Captain regardless of rank.
